How to Reset a Hikvision Password

Locked out of your Hikvision camera, DVR or NVR? Here are four methods to regain access.

Before you start: Not all Hikvision devices support every method below. Go to the Forget Password page on your device or web browser to see which options are available for your specific product.
1

Reset via SADP Tool

Recommended for devices on your local network

The SADP (Smart Active Detection Protocol) tool is free software from Hikvision that detects devices on your network and lets you reset passwords without needing to access the web interface.

  1. Download and install the SADP tool from the Hikvision website.
  2. Connect your PC to the same network as the Hikvision device.
  3. Open SADP — it will automatically scan and list all Hikvision devices.
  4. Select your device from the list and click Forgot Password.
  5. Choose a verification method (security questions, GUID file, or Hik-Connect).
  6. Follow the on-screen steps to set a new password.
SADP is the most reliable method for local resets and works even if the web interface is inaccessible.
2

Reset via Hik-Connect or Hik-Partner Pro App

If the device is registered to an account

If your device is linked to a Hik-Connect or Hik-Partner Pro account, you can use the app to verify and reset the password.

  1. On the device's login page, click Forgot Password.
  2. Select Verification by Hik-Connect from the drop-down list.
  3. A QR code will appear on screen.
  4. Open the Hik-Connect (or Hik-Partner Pro) app on your phone.
  5. In the app, go to More → Retrieve Device Password and scan the QR code.
  6. A verification code will be sent to your registered email or phone.
  7. Enter the verification code on the device and set a new password.
This method requires the device to have been previously added to a Hik-Connect account and have an active internet connection.
3

Reset via Security Questions

If security questions were set up during initial configuration

When setting up a Hikvision device for the first time, you may have been prompted to choose security questions and answers.

  1. On the login page, click Forgot Password.
  2. Select Security Question Verification from the drop-down list.
  3. Answer your pre-set security questions correctly.
  4. Create and confirm a new password.
If you did not set security questions during initial setup, this option will not be available.
4

Reset via GUID File

If a GUID file was exported when the device was first set up

A GUID file is a security key file that can be exported from a Hikvision device during initial setup. If you saved this file, it can be used to reset the password.

  1. On the login page, click Forgot Password.
  2. Select GUID File Verification from the drop-down list.
  3. Browse to and import your saved GUID file.
  4. Create and confirm a new password.
The GUID file must have been exported from this specific device at the time of setup. A GUID from a different device will not work.

Tips & Notes

Things to keep in mind

  • Password requirements typically include at least 8 characters, with a mix of uppercase, lowercase, numbers and symbols.
  • After a successful reset, update the password in any apps (Hik-Connect, iVMS-4200) that were using the old password.
  • If none of the above methods work, a full factory reset may be required — this will erase all settings and recordings.
