Untethered iOS 5.0.1 Jailbreak for iPhone 4 is Confirmed

Until now, jailbreaks for iOS 5 devices, other than iPad 2 and iPhone 4S, were available only as tethered or semi-tethered solutions; users who installed these jailbreaks on their devices had to connect their iPhones or iPads to a computer or to a laptop in order to get them booted up.

Now, apparently, a truly untethered solution for iOS 5.0.1 is on its way to general release, as pod2g (see his blog here), a well known iOS hacker recently showed.

He posted a two minute video demonstrating his untethered jailbreak solution. The French hacker managed to jailbreak his iPhone 4 and an iPod 3G. Without entering too much into detail, pod2g only explained that, “the exploit is user-land, rely on a user ROP payload and a kernel write anywhere exploit”.

On Sunday, he reported that the first part of the plan was accomplished and he had managed to come up with an untethered iOS 5.0.1 jailbreak solution that worked perfectly on his iPhone 4, posting on Twitter: “Got an untethered iPhone 4 running iOS 5.0.1. Feel free to update.”

On Monday he managed to crack the iPod 3G, and the French hacker also let his fans know he plans to upgrade the iPod 4G, iPad 1 and iPhone 3GS next.

However, there is no news about when he will release the solutions.
