Transfer music from iPod to PC without losing file names

If you own and use an iPod or iPhone for storing music, you’ve probably run into the frustration of being unable to easily copy these songs to your PC. While there are manual workarounds (like Houdini 3) that can accomplish this task, they often leave the file name formatting illegible. For easy copying while ensuring your music folder remains neat and tidy, use Sharepod, a free and lightweight tool that can access, change, and copy the music from your iPod or iPhone.

First you’ll need to download Sharepod (no installation required).

Step 1: Close iTunes (if open), plug in your iPod or iPhone and then run Sharepod.

Step 2: Select all of the tracks you want to copy from the list in the program’s main window. Once you’ve made your selections, click on Copy to PC in the top left-hand corner.

Step 3: In the Copy to PC window that appears, select a destination for the files on your PC. You can set up the sorting hierarchy in the section labeled “I want my music to look like this.” Click OK to copy the tracks.

After copying has completed, it’s like the music was on your PC the whole time. This is a great tool if you recently suffered a data loss, such as from having to reformat your machine due to spyware, or your computer falling out a window–you know, just as an example.
