Snap photos, make lists with iPhone app Nine

I’m sure Evernote is wonderful, but it’s overkill for my note-taking and information-capturing needs. In the absence of Evernote and apps of its ilk, I often resort to snapping shots with my phone as reminders of things to buy, books to read, recipes to try and so on. Then, when I need to recall the information in a photo, I swipe and swipe through my iPhone’s photo library to locate it. It’s not a perfect plan and perhaps not really a plan at all, but it’s my current mode of operation. With new iPhone app Nine, however, I now have a better way to manage my photo reminders.

Nine lets you snap a photo (or grab one from your library) and then tag it among nine different categories. Nine’s nine tags are:

• Do
• Go
• Buy
• Listen
• Watch
• Read
• Note
• Love
• Make

After taking a photo with the app or loading one from your photo library, you can give the photo a label and choose up to three of the nine tags. You can then browse a feed of all of the tags or browse by individual tag. Swipe left on an item in the feed to archive or delete it. You can also search by label. Nine also provides location information for each photo.

I love having visual lists of books to read, things to buy, and recipes to make, but I wish there was a category for receipts. I suppose I could designate a seldom-used category to keep track of important receipts. There is also no way to set reminders with Nine, so you can’t have the app alert you to stop at the store on the way home to buy Club Crackers, for example.

Nine requires iOS 8 and is free for a limited time.
