How to change storage limits for Photos, Music apps on the Apple Watch

With such a finite amount of storage available on the Apple Watch — a measly 8 gigabytes — Apple has opted to limit how much storage users can assign for the Music and Photos apps to take up.

You have some, albeit limited, control over how much space is taken up on your watch. Here’s how to adjust how much storage the Photos and Music apps take up on your watch.

  • Launch the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.
  • Scroll down and find Music; tap on it.
  • Select Playlist Limit.
  • Decide if you want to set a limit based on the number of songs, or the amount of storage. Set the storage limit.
  • After making your selection, back out of the Music section.

You can’t get around the limit of 2 gigabytes by selecting to limit the number of songs stored on your Apple Watch; the limit is still 2 gigabytes, no matter what.

  • Launch the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.
  • Scroll down and find Photos; tap on it.
  • Select Photos Limit.
  • This time the messaging is a bit clearer: Regardless of the selected photo count, the limit is still based on storage size. In this case, you can max out at a lowly 75 megabytes. (Granted, browsing photos on the watch in’t the ideal experience.)
  • After making your selection, back out of the Photos section.
