Samsung has doubled down on design with the global launch of the Galaxy Tab S2, offering a metal-framed device that is both thinner and lighter than its predecessor, the Galaxy Tab S, while offering two options for screen size.

The South Korean tech company is not only touting the metal-framed Tab S2 as the “thinnest and lightest tablet of its size ever,” but it has also cut down the 10.5-inch display of the original Tab S, launching both an 8-inch and 9.7-inch model with this new iteration.

Talk of a new tablet from Samsung has been some months in the making after details of the rumoured Tab S2 were leaked in May. Final specs for the device have come good on those rumours, with both models largely packing the same features under the hood, despite the variations in screen size.

The Tab S2 will come with Google’s Android 5.0 Lollipop, powered by an Octacore processor running one quad-core at 1.9GHz and a second quad-core at 1.3GHz. Although the Tab S2 will be available in two screen sizes, both the 8.0-inch model and the 9.7-inch model will feature a 2,048×1,563 resolution Super AMOLED display.

There’s a fingerprint scanner built in, photography is covered by an 8-megapixel rear camera and 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera, and Microsoft Office Solutions comes pre-loaded with the option of up to 100GB of cloud storage through OneDrive.

With 3GB of RAM, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 will be available with 32 or 64GB of internal storage, expandable up to 128GB via microSD, and both sizes will be offered in Wi-Fi/LTE and Wi-Fi only connectivity options.

The Tab S2 will be available in global markets from August 2015, but no pricing has been announced.
